Call for expressions of interest for funding to improve energy efficiency in the NHS

NHS Trusts and Foundation Trusts can bid for a share of £50 million capital funding to invest during 2013-14.

The funding will support new and innovative projects to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and increase resilience to climate change as set out in the NHS Carbon Reduction Strategy for England (CRS).

The provision of NHS healthcare services is highly specialised and energy intensive. The NHS has one of the largest estates in Europe, covering 6,886 hectares of land with 28 million square metres of floor space. Energy consumption cost a reported £583 million in 2011-12. making energy consumption a major consideration for NHS organisations in terms of budget.

For further details and to register an expression of interest see the application guidance pack. David Flory, Deputy NHS Chief Executive, has written to all NHS Chief Executives, Directors of Finance, and Estates and Facilities Directors, giving an overview of the programme.

Successful projects will begin from 2013 and will be subject to national evaluation. Initial expression of interest bids must be submitted by 28 February 2013.
